Four Muslim schoolgirls in Singapore face suspension from school if they continue to wear Islamic headscarves to class in defiance of a government ban.

The government has been urging the four primary schoolchildren and their parents to obey the ban, saying that school uniforms build unity among students. A letter from the Ministry of Education said the four will be suspended on Friday if they continue to wear the scarves.

Muslims have complained that the ban on schoolgirls goes against the laws of Islam. The government says the girls can wear the scarves anywhere else but in school.
