Australian Open Win Puts Johansson at Top of Champions Race Rankings

Swedish tennis player Thomas Johansson has moved to the top of the Champions Race rankings after his surprise win over Russian Marat Safin at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Sunday.

The Champions Race rankings start fresh each January. They include the points earned during a calendar year from the four Grand Slams, the nine Tennis Masters Series events, and a players best five additional results International Series events.

Johansson's first Grand Slam title gave him 200 points to bring his total to 209 this year. Marat Safin is in second place with 143 points followed by Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic with 117. Tommy Haas of Germany and Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco round out the top five.

In the women's world rankings, American Jennifer Capriati remains at number one after beating Martina Hingis in the final of the Australian Open. The victory increased her lead over injured compatriot Lindsay Davenport in second place. Venus Williams, also of the United States, is third, followed by Aussie Open runner-up Martina Hingis of Switzerland and No. 5 Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
