Asian stock markets closed mixed Monday, with the key markets in Tokyo and Singapore both rising.
Tokyo's Nikkei index gained nearly one percent (77 points), to close at 10,221. The Nikkei gained nearly one percent Friday.
Singapore shares surged for a second straight session on renewed optimism over the U.S. economy. The Straits Times Index rose more than two percent (42 points) to close at 1,773 points. Singapore shares rocketed more than four percent on Friday.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Taipei, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. Prices dropped in Jakarta, Hong Kong, Wellington, Manila, Bangkok and Bombay. Australian markets were closed for the Australia Day holiday.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.85 yen in Tokyo, down 0.83 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, and also below its late Friday New York level of 134.27 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose 10 cents, to close at $279.75 an ounce.
