Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has disputed a report in Newsweek magazine that his country was an operational launchpad for the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Mr. Mahathir told a news conference in Kuala Lumpur Monday that Malaysians had been trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan and had returned with the intention to destabilize the country. However, he said there was no proof that they had links to international terrorist operations.

In its latest edition, Newsweek says secret FBI data describes Malaysia as a primary operational launchpad for the airborne suicide attacks in New York and Washington.

Some information for this report provided by AFP and AP.
