East Timor independence leader Xanana Gusmao has arrived in Japan for a six-day visit.

Mr. Gusmao will hold separate talks with Prime minister Junichiro Koizumi and Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka on Wednesday. He is also scheduled to visit Japan's southern island of Okinawa before returning to East Timor on February second.

Mr. Gusmao is widely expected to win East Timor's first presidential election to be held on April 16. That election is seen as East Timor's final step towards full independence from Indonesia.
