US Stocks Mixed Friday

U.S. stocks were mixed at closing Friday, one day after Central Bank chairman Alan Greenspan told U.S. lawmakers he sees several encouraging signs that indicate the economy may be emerging from recession.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood 44 points (.5 percent) higher, to end the week at 9,840.

The broad market indicator, the S&P 500, rose more than one point (.1 percent) to 1,133.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell nearly five points (.25 percent) to 1,938.

In London, the Financial Times Index finished Friday with a loss of 40 points (.75 percent) to end at 5,193.

In Paris, the Cac 40 Index ended the day down by 24 points (.5 percent) at 4,484.

Frankfurt's Dax Index lost 14 points (.3 percent) to end the week at 5,157.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei Index ended Friday trading up 70 points (.7 percent) at 10,144, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index finished Friday ahead by 31.5 points at 10,773.

Gold for current delivery in New York closed at $278.80 an ounce, up 70 cents from Thursday. London gold closed at $279 dollars an ounce, up $1 from Thursday's close.

The dollar was mixed against the other major currencies.
