The sedition trial of a jailed opposition leader in Swaziland has been postponed until February so the defendant may seek treatment for a hearing problem.

A judge in Swaziland's High Court said Friday that the trial of Mario Masuku, head of the outlawed People's United Democratic Front, would continue on February 4.

The proceedings will take place amid tight security in the capital of the southern African kingdom, Mbabane.

The judge also warned the state prosecutor that he did not agree with the state's intent to ban the media and the public from the trial.

At least 11 police officers are set to testify against Mr. Masuku, who is accused of calling for revolution at a rally in September of 2000. Mr. Masuku also allegedly called two months later for the removal of King Mswati III.

Despite the state's request for restrictions, the court allowed reporters and the public to attend the first day of proceedings.

If convicted, Mr. Masuku could face up to 20 years in jail. He has been in prison since October, awaiting trial.
