Germany plans to send its largest ever Winter Olympics delegation to next month's Salt Lake City games. The German Olympic Committee said Friday that the squad will have 159 to 163 competitors. The committee said the total number will be determined on results still to come in alpine skiing and speed skating. One speed skater and three skiers could be added to the current team of 159.

The Germans are traditionally strong in winter sports. They led the medals table at the 1998 Nagano Olympics with 29, including 12 gold. Norway was second with 10 gold medals in its total of 25.

Besides skiing and speed skating, Germany is expected to be strong in bobsledding, luge, ski jumping, and biathlon.
