Germany's Thorsten Wilhelms is the winner of the inaugural five-day Tour of Qatar cycling race after finishing first in the final stage.

Wilhelms has been second overall heading into Friday's last stage, and he won the 125-kilometer leg ending in Doha from Messaieed in a sprint finish. He peddled it in blustery conditions in a time of 3:18:22.

France's Damien Nazon, who finished the stage in ninth place, was second overall, just five seconds behind Wilhelms. The German rider had also won the third stage on Wednesday. The 118 riders who started the final stage peddled against a strong headwind.

Finishing second in the stage was Dutch rider Rudi Kemna and Brazil's Luciano Pagliarini was third.
