Pope John Paul II has accepted an invitation to visit his native Poland this August for the first time since 1999.
Polish president Aleksander Kwasniewski formally presented the invitation during a meeting with the pope at the Vatican Thursday.
The pontiff was born in southern Poland and served as archbishop of Krakow before he was named head of the Roman Catholic Church in October of 1978.
Pope John Paul, who will be 82 in May, is already scheduled to visit Bulgaria, Canada, Mexico and Guatemala this year.
