Canadian military planes are following an Air India passenger jet to New York City's John F. Kennedy International airport after authorities determined it was carrying a suspicious passenger.

It is not known what prompted the alert. The Associated Press quotes U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, FAA officials as saying they had spoken with the airliner's crew who indicated they were not alarmed.

The New York-bound Air India plane departed from London and was intercepted over the Atlantic Ocean.
