The International Olympic Committee has announced that it is investigating whether blood transfusion equipment was used to enhance the performance of cross country skiers in the Winter Olympics.

In a statement Wednesday, the IOC said the equipment was found earlier this week by a crew cleaning a house used by the Austrian team for the Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

The cleaners found equipment including several blood transfusion bags, transfusion sets with blood residue, glucose bottles and vitamins. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee's doping control workers photographed the evidence and turned it over to a representative of the IOC's medical commission.

IOC President Jacques Rogge has ordered that all scientific techniques be used in the investigation. That includes using DNA evidence to attempt to determine who was involved in the blood transfusions.
