Reigning World Cup and Olympic field hockey champion the Netherlands has played Spain to a 1-1 draw at this year's World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Karel Klaver scored for the Dutch in the 16th minute but Spain equalized in the second half with a goal by Jordi Quintana 15 minutes from time. The result leaves the two teams tied atop pool-A with 10 points each.

Four-time champion Pakistan got a shock from Argentina when the South Americans scored a 2-1 win in another Pool A match. Tomas MacCormik and Matias Paredes scored for the Argentines. Sohail Abbas scored Pakistan's lone goal.

Also Thursday, New Zealand defeated South Africa, 2-1.

The two pools of eight teams will take part in round-robin play and the top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals. The final is scheduled for March ninth at Malaysia's National Hockey Stadium.
