The San Jose Sharks scored three goals in the second period here in Washington Thursday to beat the Capitals 5-2 in National Hockey League play. The win was the seventh straight for San Jose.

The Pittsburgh Penguins scored a goal in the final half-minute of regulation, then won it it overtime, edging the host Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3.

Mike Modano of Dallas scored as time ran out in overtime to give the Stars a 4-3 win over the Canucks in Vancouver. Colorado's Chris Drury scored an overtime goal to lift the Avalanche to a 2-1 decision over the visiting Phoenix Coyotes.

The Nashville Predators scored with less than two minutes remaining to complete a rally in Edmonton where the Predators beat the Oilers 3-2. Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime notched his second shut-out of the season, stopping 34 shots to lead the Senators to a 3-0 blanking of the Rangers in New York.

In the other NHL games Thursday, Carolina's Ron Francis scored a goal and had three assists to lead the Hurricanes to a 6-2 rout of the Bruins in Boston. And, the Calgary Flames built a 3-0 lead over the visiting St. Louis Blues, then held on to win 3-2.
