Tennis: Federer Heads to 2nd Round of Dubai Open

Roger Federer of Switzerland has advanced into the second round of the Dubai Open tennis tournament with a straight-sets win over Adrian Voinea of Romania.
The sixth-seeded Federer defeated Voinea, 6-3, 6-4, on Wednesday. In another first round matchup, Max Mirnyi of Belarus defeated Renzo Furlan of Italy, 6-3, 6-4. Mirnyi will play fifth-seeded Tim Henman of Britain in the second round.
In second round matches Wednesday, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia topped Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, 6-4, 6-2, while eighth-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic knocked off Axel Pretzsch of Germany, 7-5, 6-1.
In later matches, number-two seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov takes on Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, and fourth-seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean plays compatriot Fabrice Santoro.
