Chinese President Jiang Zemin has urged the youth of China and Vietnam to promote friendly ties between the former rival nations and contribute to world peace.

Speaking on the second day of a three-day visit to Vietnam, Mr. Jiang told students at Hanoi University Thursday that young people are an important part of what he called a better future for the Sino-Vietnamese relationship.

Mr. Jiang said that relationship needs to be nurtured regularly, and that cooperation needs to be enhanced and expanded.

The Chinese leader began his visit to Vietnam Wednesday, meeting with Vietnam's top leaders for talks focusing on military and economic ties. Relations between China and Vietnam have steadily improved since the two countries re-established full relations in 1991. They fought a brief but bloody war in 1979, after Vietnam invaded Cambodia to oust the Beijing-backed Khmer Rouge regime.
