Media reports say a car bomb exploded early Thursday in a suburb of the northern Spanish city of Bilbao, injuring two people.

Authorities say the injured -- a local Socialist political official (Esther Cabezudo) and her bodyguard -- were taken to a hospital. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Car bombs in Spain's northern Basque region are often the work of the Basque separatist organization ETA.

The group has frequently staged deadly attacks in its 33-year campaign for creation of an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France. The Attacks have cost more than 800 lives.
