Asian stock markets closed mixed Thursday, with the key market in Tokyo edging higher and stocks in Hong Kong slumping to a three-week low.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained a fraction of one percent (15 points), to close at 10,587. The Nikkei surged 3.6 percent Wednesday.

Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, fell more than 1 percent (166 points), to finish at 10,415. The Hang Seng rose nearly 1 percent Wednesday.

Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Bangkok, Jakarta, Seoul and Bombay. Markets registered gains in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila and Wellington. Financial markets were closed in Taipei for a holiday.

The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.88 yen in Tokyo, down 0.58 yen from late Wednesday in Tokyo, and also below its late Wednesday New York level of 134.27 yen.

The price of gold in Hong Kong fell 60 cents, to close at $296.65 an ounce.
