Spanish police say they have detained a group of people suspected of belonging to a cell of the Basque separatist organization, ETA.
Reuters news Thursday quotes officials as saying the detainees were planning a bomb attack during a European Union summit in Barcelona next month.
Earlier Thursday, authorities blamed ETA for a bomb explosion in a suburb of the northern Spanish city of Bilbao that injured several people. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Authorities say the injured include a local Socialist political official Esther Cabezudo and her bodyguard, who were taken to a hospital.
ETA has frequently staged deadly attacks in its 33-year campaign for creation of an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France. The Attacks have cost more than 800 lives.
