A Sri Lankan news report says President Chandrika Kumaratunga is threatening to override a landmark cease-fire agreement signed last week between Tamil rebels and the ruling party of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The peace deal, brokered by Norway and signed Friday, halts hostilities in an 18-year civil war with Tamil rebels, and forms the basis for permanent peace talks that Mr. Wickremesinghe said could begin as early as next month.
The Daily Mirror newspaper quotes the president as saying Mr. Wickremesinghe did not consult her about details of the cease-fire deal before it was signed last week.
The prime minister has denied the charges, while admitting that fast-moving events prevented him from adding several changes to the deal that the president had proposed.
The president says she found several suspicious clauses in the cease-fire that she wants to study. She said she will take necessary action if she is not satisfied with the deal.
President Kumaratunga controls the army and has sweeping powers to sack the government. She was elected separately from Mr. Wickremesinghe, a long-time rival from a different political party.
