Top-seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain advanced to the second round of the Dubai tennis Open Tuesday after Czech opponent Bohdan Ulihrach retired with a wrist injury following the first set. Ferrero won the first set, 7-5.

Third-seed and Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson of Sweden beat Albert Costa of Spain, 6-3, 6-0. Fourth-seeded Frenchman Sebastian Grosjean also moved into the next round, overcoming Austrian Stefan Koubek, 6-2, 6-2.

Fifth-seed Tim Henman of Britain defeated Omar Behrouzyan of United Arab Emirates, 6-1, 6-0.

In other matches, Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands was a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Arnaud Clement of France; Rainer Schuettler of Germany defeated Tommy Robredo of Spain, 6-3, 6-2; Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia beat Cedric Pioline of France, 6-3, 6-2, and Alex Calatrava of Spain downed Mikhail Youzhny of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-4.
