Britain's Queen Elizabeth has arrived in Australia, where a political controversy threatens to overshadow her five-day visit.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, were greeted Wednesday in the southern city of Adelaide by Governor General Peter Hollingworth. He is under intense pressure to resign over allegations he covered up child sex abuse by members of the clergy during his 11 years as Anglican bishop of Brisbane in the 1990's.

Queen Elizabeth is due to hold talks with Mr. Hollingworth as well as Prime Minister John Howard. On Saturday, she is scheduled to open a Commonwealth leaders' summit in Queensland state.

The queen's visit to Australia is part of a worldwide jubilee tour that has already taken her to New Zealand and Jamaica.
