Second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia has advanced to the second round of the Dubai Tennis Open Monday with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Vasilas Mazarakis of Greece. Also, unseeded German Nicolas Keifer downed Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-4. It was Keifer's first tour win in four months.
Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui defeated Romania's Andrei Pavel, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 while Fabrice Santoro of Spain scored a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win over German qualifier Michael Kohlman.
Defending champion and top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain will take on Czech Bohdan Ulirach in his first match of the tournament Tuesday afternoon.
