Most Asian stock markets closed higher Tuesday, while the key market in Tokyo lost ground.
Tokyo's Nikkei index fell nearly 94 points (one percent), to close at 10,203. The Nikkei gained a fraction of one percent Monday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, rose a fraction of one percent (51 points), to finish at 10,547. The Hang Seng fell more than one percent Monday.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Singapore, Seoul and Wellington. Markets also registered gains in Sydney and Bombay. Share prices were lower in in Taipei, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, and virtually unchanged in Manila. Financial markets were closed in Bangkok for a holiday.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 134 yen in Tokyo, up 0.21 yen from late Monday in Tokyo, and also above its late Monday New York level of 133.96 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose $1.60 to close at $292.85 cents an ounce.
