US Stocks Lower

U.S. stocks have turned lower in afternoon trading after a report showing a drop in consumer confidence dampened optimism for an economic rebound anytime soon.
The Dow Jones Industrial average is down 68 points at 10.078, while the broad market indicator, the S&P 500, is down 5 points at 1,104. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index is 17 points (1 percent) lower at 1,753.
In London, the Financial Times Index ended the day up 38 points at 5,139, while in Paris, the CAC 40 was up 35 points at 4,341. The DAX in Frankfurt is 17 points higher at 4,881.
Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index fell 94 points (nearly 1 percent) to close at 10,203, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index picked up 51 points to end the day at 10,547.
The price of gold closed in London at $295.90 an ounce, up $5.30.
