Australian freestyle swimmer Ian Thorpe is considering taking up a new stroke in an attempt to win a record seven gold medals at this year's Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. Thorpe won three gold medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and six golds in last year's championships in Japan, but wants to try his hand at the backstroke.

Thorpe has entered the 100 meter backstroke at next month's Australian championships in Brisbane and, if successful, may swIm the event in Manchester.

Thorpe will start as a strong favorite in the 100, 200, and 400 meter freestyle individual events and will also swim the three relays.
