The Federal Bureau of Investigation says it has a list of up to 20 people who had the means, opportunity and possible motive to have sent anthrax-tainted letters, but is no closer to naming a firm suspect.

FBI investigators are continuing to focus attention on former and current employees at laboratories and research facilities that have samples of the Ames strain of anthrax, which has been identified as the type contained in letters last fall. Five people in the United States died of the disease.

FBI profilers have said the culprit is likely to be an older man and a loner who lives in the United States and has substantial scientific and laboratory skills. The profilers have said they believe the anthrax suspect has no ties to organized terrorists, but sought to use the September 11th terrorist attacks as cover for the mailings.
