Kobe Bryant hit a five-meter shot as time ran out Friday to lead the defending National Basketball Association champion Los Angeles Lakers to a 96-94 victory over the Hornets in Charlotte (North Carolina).

Bryant scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, while Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers with 31. Charlotte's Baron Davis led all scorers with 37 points.

The Detroit Pistons set a franchise record by winning their seventh straight road game, an 80-72 decision over the Toronto Raptors. Cleveland's Andre Miller scored 27 points to lead the Cavaliers to a 103-93 win over the Pacers in Indianapolis.

The Eastern Conference-leading New Jersey Nets won their fifth straight game, easing past visiting New York 115-93; the loss was the Knicks' fourth straight. The Bulls beat the Phoenix Suns, 91-83, in Chicago.

Milwaukee's Ray Allen hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds to give the host Bucks a 116-112 win over the Golden State Warriors. Allen finished with 28 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists to overcome Jason Richardson's career-high 35 points for the Warriors. The Seattle SuperSonics edged the visiting Atlanta Hawks 99-96.
