Golfer Toms Only Top-10 Seed Left in Match Play Championship

American golfer David Toms is the only top-10 seed still around for the quarterfinals of the Match Play Championship after number-four Sergio Garcia of Spain was ousted by number-45 Scott McCarron of the United States.

Garcia fell behind on the first hole Friday at the La Costa Resort course in Carlsbad, California, and never caught up. McCarron finished one-up in the head-to-head competition.

Number-six Toms advanced to the final eight with a (one-up) victory over his good friend Steve Flesch (number 54).

The only non-American still around is Jose Maria Olazabal, seeded 26th, after he defeated number-23 Mark Calcavecchia (two-up).

Number-62 Kevin Sutherland pulled off a key upset Friday, defeating number-14 Jim Furyk (four and three).

The others advancing were number-47 Brad Faxon, (number-28 Tom Lehman, (number-25 Paul Azinger and (number-17 Bob Estes.

The top three seeds, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and David Duval, all lost in the first round Wednesday, while five more seeds suffered defeat in the second round Thursday.

Estes edged number-32 Nick Price of Zimbabwe, one-up on Friday. Azinger got by number-41 Niclas Fasth of Sweden, one-up. Lehman crushed number-53 Matt Gogel, four and three. And Faxon defeated number-63 John Cook, three and two.

Meanwhile, American golfer Brandel Chamblee has a two-shot lead midway through the Tucson (Arizona) Open after firing a 5-under-par 67 on Friday.

His 12-under (132) total for two rounds places him ahead of Americans Steve Pate and Bob Tway heading into round three today (Saturday).
