The Democrats have hailed what they term the world's triumph over terrorism at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Delivering the Democrats' weekly radio address, Representative Jim Matheson from Utah commended those who have provided the unprecedented security at the Olympics - noting that military personnel outnumbered athletes four to one.

The Democratic congressman also praised Olympic spectators for calmly accepting the measures as the new price of admission to major events.

He said the tragedy of September 11 had prompted many to fear the Olympics would have to be canceled, but as he put it, "determination prevailed."
