U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton has leveled harsh criticism at Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, calling him a failed leader whose actions have derailed Mideast peacemaking efforts.
The former U.S. first lady made her comments Saturday to a gathering of U.S. Jewish leaders in Jerusalem. Senator Clinton, wife of former President Bill Clinton, blamed Mr. Arafat for 17 months of Israeli-Palestinian violence.
In 1999, Mrs. Clinton angered many Jews by listening politely as Mr. Arafat's wife accused Israel of using poison gas against Palestinians. Mrs. Clinton later said the remark was baseless.
Sunday, the first lady-turned New York senator meets with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
