French skier Jean-Pierre Vidal has won the final Alpine event of the Salt Lake City Olympics, speeding to gold in the men's slalom at Park City, Utah.
Vidal, who three years ago severed ligaments in both knees in a training accident and spent 45 days in a wheelchair, posted a time of one minute, 41.06 seconds Saturday. His Olympic debut was better than French teammate Sebastien Amiez (1:41.82). Alain Baxter won bronze (1:42.32) to become the first British skier to win an Olympic Alpine medal.
American Bode Miller was trying to become the first U.S. skier to win three career Olympic medals after winning two at the Salt Lake games. But Miller fell twice on a treacherous final slalom run that wiped out many of the top contenders.
