A van carrying international election observers has been attacked by youths in Zimbabwe. The Southern African Development Community group came under attack after it left a campaign rally in Chinhoyi, located about 100 kilometers north of the capital.

Political analysts say the town is in a stronghold of supporters loyal to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe

The election observers had come to hear the leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mr. Tsvangirai poses a serious challenge to President Mugabe in the March elections.

Meanwhile, the leader of the observers from the Commonwealth, Nigerian General Abdusalami Abubakar, says he is determined to make sure that the mission stays strictly impartial.

General Abubakar told a news conference that observers would remain in the country after the election to see whether the result is accepted throughout the country.
