A new public opinion survey says slightly more than half of Taiwan's people believe the United States will help defend the island if China launches an unprovoked attack.
The survey, conducted by the United Daily News, also says some 67 percent of those polled believe the Taiwan-China dispute will be settled peacefully.
The poll was conducted just days after last week's visit to Beijing by President Bush.
During that trip, Mr. Bush said there will be no change in U.S. policy on Taiwan, including U.S. weapons sales to the island, which Beijing considers a renegade province.
