A new radio service for Afghanistan, sponsored by the European Union, was to go on the air Monday.

Called "Good Morning Afghanistan," the two-hour broadcast in Pashtu and Dari languages is billed as a mix of news, sports, travel, weather and features.

Twenty young journalists were recruited to write, produce and air the broadcast from an old radio building in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Production assistance is provided by a Danish-based foundation called the Baltic Media Center, which supports journalists in 30 countries.

The European Commission provided more than $200,000 for "Good Morning Afghanistan." The funds are part of a multimillion-dollar aid package promised by the European Union to rebuild Afghanistan after the fall of the Taleban.
