Most Asian stock markets closed lower Monday, led by losses in the region's two largest markets, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Tokyo's key Nikkei index fell 0.6 percent (60 points), to close at 10,296. The Nikkei gained slightly Friday.
Hong Kong's key index, the Hang Seng, fell 1.6 percent (169 points), to finish at 10,496. The Hang Seng fell more than one percent Friday.
Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Jakarta, Singapore and Taipei. Markets also registered losses in Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. Share prices were higher in Wellington and Bangkok, and virtually unchanged in Sydney. Financial markets in Manila were closed for a holiday.
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 133.84 yen in Tokyo, down 0.46 yen from late Friday in Tokyo, but above its late Friday level in New York of 133.81 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong fell $2.00, to close at $291.25 an ounce.
