Svetlana Feofanova of Russia has broken the world indoor record in the pole vault for the fourth time this month.

Feofanova cleared 4.737 meters at the Gaz de France meet in Lievin Sunday. She added 6 millimeters to the mark she set two weeks ago at a meet in Belgium.

The Russian failed at a vault of 4.82, which would have been 13 millimeters better than the world outdoor mark held by U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Stacy Dragila.

Dragila was fourth at the meet with a top effort of 4.48 meters. She held the world indoor record before Feofanova began her record-breaking streak this month.

In U.S. track and field competition, officials have canceled the Big Ten conference indoor championships after a pole vaulter died in competition.

A sophomore from Penn State University, Kevin Dare, fell during a pole vault attempt Saturday and hit his head. He was treated by medical experts but never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a local hospital.

Dare won the pole vault in the U.S. junior championships last June at 5.05 meters.

The Russian ITAR-Tass news agency reports that American Jeff Hartwig won the Pole Vault Stars meet in Ukraine Sunday, clearing 5.95 meters.

Fellow American Timothy Mack was second and Russian Pavel Gerasimov was third.
