College Basketball: Kansas, Maryland Still Top Teams

In U.S. College Basketball, the top two teams in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll have maintained their spots after surviving scares.

Number one Kansas and second-ranked Maryland both trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before slipping past their foes Sunday. Kansas defeated Nebraska 88-87, and Maryland topped Wake Forest 90-89.

Duke remained number three after demolishing Saint John's 97-55 on Sunday.

The bottom of the poll saw a mild shakeup. Virginia, which lost six of its last nine games, dropped out after falling from number 15. Syracuse, which had been 25, also dropped out after losing Sunday to Georgetown, 75 to 69.

Western Kentucky moved into the poll at number 23 and California entered at number 25.

In other top 25 action Sunday, Michigan State upset 21 ranked Indiana, 57 to 54. Marcus Taylor scored 16 points for Michigan State, eight in the final three minutes, 21 seconds.

David West tallied 25 points and Romain Sato had 16 to lead number 24 Xavier over Duquesne, 80-66.
