President Bush is on his way home, after urging China to embrace American-style democracy and religious freedom.

President Bush wrapped up a week-long visit to Asia, Friday, boarding his official plane in Beijing for the long trip back to Washington. Before leaving, he told students at Beijing's Qinghua University that he looks forward to the day when China is fully democratic.

In his nationally televised address, the U.S. president said China should welcome freedom and tolerance, not fear them. He also said the United States will stick by its pledge to defend Taiwan, but he also called for peaceful dialogue between the island and Beijing.

Mr. Bush met briefly with Vice President Hu Jintao, who is expected to become China's president next year. The U.S. leader and his wife also visited China's Great Wall before departing.

The China visit ended an Asian trip for President Bush that included stops in Tokyo and Seoul. Aides say no major breakthrough was achieved on disputed issues between Washington and Beijing, but that lower-level discussions are continuing.
