Pakistan's military-led government has promised support to an overland natural gas pipeline from Iran to India, which would pass through Pakistani territory.

The Pakistani comments follow meetings in Islamabad Thursday between Pakistani officials and visiting Iranian Oil Minister Bejan Namdar Zanganeh.

Plans to transfer natural gas from an overland pipeline that would run from Iran to India, through Pakistan, have long been under discussion. But progress has been impeded by regional political problems, especially the simmering hostility between Pakistan and India.

Tensions are high between the nuclear rivals. Both countries have massed thousands of troops along their border following the bloody December 13 attack on the Indian parliament.

New Delhi blames the Pakistani spy agency and two Pakistan-based Islamic groups for the assault. Islamabad denies the charges.
