Some Cambodian non-governmental organizations say they support the United Nations' decision to pull out of negotiations aimed at prosecuting former leaders of the Khmer Rouge.

Speaking on behalf of 18 NGO's, the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee said Thursday they understand the U.N. decision to abandon talks with the Cambodian government. At the same time, the organizations urged the United Nations to persist in its efforts to prosecute the former Khmer Rouge leaders for alleged genocide.

The world body pulled out of five years of negotiations with the Cambodian government earlier this month, saying Cambodian officials were not interested in establishing a tribunal that would meet international standards of justice.
