One of Washington, D.C.'s most recognized landmarks re-opens to visitors Friday after being closed for more than a year for renovation.
Tourists will ride a new elevator to the top of the Washington Monument, a marble obelisk that rises high above the nation's capital city.
New security measures have been added, including airport-style X-ray machines and metal detectors, and barriers to block against vehicles carrying bombs.
The security features were planned after terrorist attacks on two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998.
Visitors will be confined to groups of 25 and pass through a security check before entering the monument.
