Only two of the top 10 seeds remain alive after the second round of the World Match Play Men's Golf championship in the U.S. state of California.

Third-seed Sergio Garcia of Spain advanced to the third round Thursday with a one-up victory over American Charles Howell. Sixth-seed David Toms of the United States also advanced with a one-up win over fellow American Rocco Mediate.

Other top-10 players were not as lucky. Fifth-seed Ernie Els of South Africa fell in a one-hole playoff to American Tom Lehman, while Paul Azinger of the United States upended eighth-seeded countryman Davis Love one-up.

Australian Peter O'Malley, who upset top-seeded American Tiger Woods in Wednesday's first round, lost to Nick Price of Zimbabwe Thursday.

The winner of the 64-player single-elimination event takes home $1 million.
