U.S. stocks are mixed in afternoon trading Friday, as downbeat forecasts by major drug and electronics firms revived uncertainty over business outlook.
The Dow Jones is 60 points higher at 9,895, and the broad market indicator, the S&P 500, is unchanged at 1,081. The technology-heavy index NASDAQ is 11 points down to 1,705, continuing the slide that led it to its lowest level in four months on Thursday.
In Europe, stocks were lower, with technology issues leading the declines. In London, the Financial Times index closed down 23 points to 5,051, and in Paris, the CAC 40 closed 42 points lower (1 percent) at 4,245. Germany's DAX index is 86 points down (1.8 percent) at 4,765.
Earlier, in Japan, the key stock-market index, the Nikkei, rose 62 points to close at 10,357, on optimism that the Japanese government will come up with a comprehensive plan to combat deflation. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index closed 124 points lower (1.15 percent) at 10,665.
The price of gold in London is $292.10 an ounce, down 50 cents.
