U.S. defense contractor Northrop Grumman has made an unsolicited offer to buy TRW for $5.9 billion, with the aim to boost its aerospace business. TRW makes space and defense products such as spacecraft and satellite technology.

Under the deal, Northrop would focus on TRW's space and systems expertise, and would sell TRW's automotive parts business, which accounts for about 60 percent of its sales.

The acquisition is subject to approval by TRW, which is currently reviewing the offer. If successful, Northrop Grumman would overtake rival Lockheed Martin to become the largest defense contractor in the United States, with sales of about $27 billion.

Northrop's offer comes three months after it made a deal to buy Newport News Shipbuilding - the sole builder of nuclear-powered aircraft in the United States.
