The D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission has signaled its willingness to grant Mike Tyson a license to fight world champion Lennox Lewis for the heavyweight title.

The board voted unanimously to move forward on Mr. Tyson's application.

That decision comes while authorities in multiple U.S. states, including Nevada, oppose his bid to fight again. The state athletic commission there refused to renew Mr. Tyson's lapsed license, on grounds his behavior tarnishes the sport.

Mr. Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992. He also was banned in 1997 after he bit boxer Evander Holyfield's ear during a world title fight. And investigations are underway for alleged sex crimes. Tyson must pass a physical and a drug test before the DC commission can grant the licence. It will host a public hearing and a public vote. The commission is ultimately expected to hold a formal vote on March 12 to decide whether to license Mr. Tyson.

Some officials in Washington, DC, like Mayor Anthony Williams, welcome the potential revenue that a proposed fight at the MCI arena would bring into the city.
