Olympic organizers say the 2002 Winter Games at Salt Lake City, Utah are expected to cost the United States government over $400 million.
Cindy Gillespie, an official of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, said an earlier estimate of $342 million in direct costs to the federal government will rise by the time the Olympics end next Sunday.
Gillespie says that nearly $60 million of the costs are due to increased security at the Games ordered after the September 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington.
