The Italian Athletics Federation has announced that Rome has formalized its bid to host the 2005 World Athletics Championships.

Gianni Gola, the president of the Italian Federation made the announcement on Wednesday. Berlin, Moscow, Helsinki, Brussels and Budapest are also in contention to host the third largest sporting event in the world. The 2005 championships had initially been awarded to London. But England's capital was stripped of the event when plans for a new Wembley stadium failed to include an athletics track, and the bid process was reopened.

World athletics governing body, the IAAF, will select the host city at a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, on April 14.
