European Share Prices Higher

European share prices are lower in midday trading.

In London, the Financial Times Index is down 68 points (more than 1 percent) at 5,024, while in Paris, the CAC 40 Index is down 30 points at 4,226. The DAX Index in Frankfurt is 38 points lower at 4,726.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is up just over a point, indicating a higher open for U.S. stocks, which fell sharply Tuesday.

Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index fell 13 points to close at 9,834, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index lost 91 points to end the day at 10,749.

The price of gold in London is $294.20 an ounce - up $2.30.

The dollar is higher against the other major currencies.
