Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica has criticized the war crimes trial of his predecessor Slobodan Milosevic at the United Nations tribunal in The Hague.

Mr. Kostunica told journalists in the Yugoslav capital, Belgrade, the first trial proceedings contained more pseudo-history than legality.

Questioning many assertions made by prosecutors in their opening statements, the Yugoslav leader said they presented a superficial and often false picture fraught with cheap politics, hypocrisy and strange inconsistencies.

Mr. Milosevic's trial opened last week and is expected to last as long as two years. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

The former Yugoslav leader is defending himself against 66 charges, including crimes against humanity in Croatia and Kosovo, and genocide during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
